Entre los cubanos brilló quien fuera su discípulo en la Academia Julliard, de Estados Unidos, durante un año, Jasek Manzano, un joven de 30 años dueño de una espléndida madurez y un talento siempre presto a derribar fronteras, a ir más allá, a explorar en la herencia africana y en el legado múltiple del Caribe. Manzano no llegó solo con su quinteto, sino que incorporó al Cuarteto de Cuerdas Amadeo Roldán. Desgranó temas como Gorgona, Cimarrón y Babel y trajo como invitado a Emir Santacruz. Luego se sumó la Jazz Band del director y arreglista Joaquín Betancourt, quien introdujo al quinteto del saxofonista Michel Herrera. El final fue de lujo con Marsalis desatando de cualquier atadura el libre vuelo de su trompeta y los músicos de la Jazz Lincoln Center en conjunción perfecta con los cubanos para que la música se expandiera añadiendo su propia temperatura e iluminara con una luz extra la tarde-noche habanera. Este encuentro con Cuba es muy importante para la música norteamericana, dijo Marsalis. Y la frase surcó el aire en brazos de su propio eco. ag |
